Annie Cattrell has been commissioned to create a large-scale, sculptural work for the atrium as the first of a series of three ‘artist chandeliers’ for the new building.
Cattrell’s proposal is a dynamic form made up of hundreds of small components massed together like a flock of birds frozen in mid-display. The idea of flocking is used as a metaphor for the movement of particles (at ever receding scales) within all organic forms. A sculpture made up of hundreds of tiny sculptures has ill-defined boundaries. Is it a single whole or a mass of smaller units? Where do bodies (and their component parts) begin and end?
