Nicky Hirst will create a large 'portal' work on the glazed ground floor wall with approximate dimensions of 6m x 2.5m. The work will create a large, intricate frame around the line of sight from the entrance into the interior of the building. The design of the frame will be a fiction, a graphic representation using biochemical imagery such as a diagram of a protein ring to create an image with superficial visual similarities to decorative framing devices. The design will be fine in detail around the perimeter and empty in the middle reflecting the building plan with intense laboratory activity at the edges and an open atrium space at the core.
